In this guide, Spitzer Chevrolet of Amherst explains how to program a Chevy garage door opener so you can waste no time enjoying your model’s high-tech features! Read below for programming instructions and troubleshooting tips.

Connecting Chevy Universal Home Remote with Your Garage

Connecting your Chevy Universal Home Remote to your garage door is simple! Before getting started in Lorrain, it’s recommended that you put a new battery in your garage’s remote control transmitter for a clearer connection between your garage and the Universal Home Remote system.

When you’re ready, follow these steps for how to program a Chevy garage door opener:

  1. Park your vehicle facing the open garage door, with a clear path between the vehicle and the garage door receiver.
  2. Access your vehicle’s center display.
  3. Tap the Controls App, then tap “Universal Remotes.” If necessary, tap “See More Controls” to access “Universal Remotes.”
  4. Tap “Add Remote.”
  5. If your garage door opener has a hand-held transmitter, tap “Yes.” Otherwise, follow the alternate steps you see on your center display screen.
  6. After tapping “Yes,” hold the transmitter approximately 1-3 inches from your rearview mirror. Press and hold the handheld transmitter button, and don’t let go until you see “Signal Found” on your center display screen.
  7. Now you can test out your Universal Home Remote system. Tap the “Test” button on the screen. Repeat this if necessary.
  8. If your garage door moved, congratulations! You’ve successfully programmed your Chevy Universal Home Remote and can now use it as your garage door opener. Tap “It Worked” on your center display screen to close out the process.
  9. If your garage door didn’t move, tap “It Didn’t Work” and move to step 10.
  10. Go to your garage door receiver. It’s probably mounted near the ceiling of your garage. Find and press the “Learn” button that’s usually located near the antenna wire.
  11. Return to your vehicle quickly, and tap the “Test” button again within 30 seconds.
  12. Tap “It Worked” and close out the process if your garage door moved; otherwise, check your Owner’s Manual in case there are other steps you need to take to program your Universal Home Remote.

Chevy Universal Home Remote Troubleshooting

If you weren’t able to successfully program your garage door with the Chevy Universal Home Remote, and the HomeLink® indicator light is rapidly flashing, you need to sync HomeLink® to your garage door opener using time-sensitive instructions. This will be easier if another adult can help by standing inside your garage while you’re in the vehicle to complete the following steps.

  1. Locate the garage door opener motor inside your garage.
  2. Search for the “Smart” or “Learn” button on your garage door opener, which is generally beside the antenna wire hanging on the back of the motor. If you can’t find it, reference the owner’s manual of your garage door opener to find the button’s location.
  3. Push the “Smart” or “Learn” button once and you’ll have a 30-second window to finish the next step.
  4. Return to your vehicle and press your programmed HomeLink® control button three times with a 2-second interval between presses. This will finish the activation process.
  5. The original remote control transmitter and the HomeLink® wireless control system, once programmed, can be used with your Chevy Universal Home Remote.
